What Apples Make the Best Apple Crisp?
When making an apple crisp, your choice of apples plays a crucial role in achieving that perfect balance of sweetness, tartness, and texture. Varieties like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, and Pink Lady bring a nice contrast of flavors to your dessert.
Tart Granny Smith apples add a pleasant bite to your crisp, and they hold their shape well during baking. Honeycrisp apples contribute a natural sweetness and a juicy, crisp texture, making them perfect for this recipe. Pink Lady apples are a classic favorite, and offer a harmonious blend of sweet and tart, ensuring a well-rounded taste in every bite.
You can choose one of these apple types or combine two or three of them for a nice blend. Whichever you choose will result in a flavorful, tasty treat.
How to Make the Perfect, Easy Apple Crisp with Dandy Blend
After deciding which apples to choose, you’ll want to wash, peel, and slice your apples. Cut them into decent sized pieces. You don’t want them too thin. Add them to a large bowl.
Next, preheat your oven to 375°F. In a separate bowl, mix your coconut sugar and cinnamon, then sprinkle over the apples and combine. Transfer them to a parchment-lined baking sheet, or one that’s well greased.
In a bowl, combine flour, more coconut sugar, oats, baking powder, Dandy Blend, nutmeg, and more cinnamon. You may use an all-purpose flour or a 1:1 gluten-free substitute. We like Bob’s Red Mill.
Then, start to add chunks of cold butter to the mixture, cutting it in until it resembles chunks of wet sand. Sprinkle the mixture over your apples, and bake for about 45 minutes to an hour, until the apples are tender. Scoop and serve warm. For a fun addition, top with a scoop of your favorite vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
